LODGE NEWS:
We have a new page on the website: Center for Sustainability.
It is, and will be, an ongoing update on the Bird Sanctuary.
Dr. Bill Norris kindly gave us his list of birds and plants documented on the grounds of Bear Mountain Lodge. He has used the property as a lab for his students for years.
Check out the lists - we know we will be adding to them with the new pond.
It is pretty exciting.
We also got great input on trail cameras from Jack Dennison, who has the YouTube site,
"Ruby's Creek." His trail cameras are in Pinos Altos just up the mountain.
His videos have bear, mountain lion, coatimundi, foxes, deer, and more.
They also have sound - a great method of identifying birds.
Please check it out; it is so wonderful to see the wildlife on his creek.
Our intention is to install trail cameras to document the wildlife who come to the pond. We are hoping to get grant funding for this and are busy writing now!
We will keep you updated via the new
Center for Sustainability page.

FINIALS GALORE - Fence Post Sitter Workshop for the Bird Sanctuary:
July 13th, Sunday to sculpt.
July 27th, Sunday to glaze the pieces.
Diana, of the Youth Mural Project, and I will offer a clay workshop on July 13th.
We will make fence post sitters, or finials. We are thinking of wildlife forms.
The workshop is a fundraiser in two ways. You as a participant will get to take home a finial for your garden; we will keep one finial for the Bird Sanctuary pond fence and add some monies to the pot.
The workshop is noon to 3pm each Sunday.
Should be fun making birds, raccoons, and bears, oh my!
Cost is $75. The proceeds go to the Youth Mural Program and Bird Sanctuary.

WINDMILL UPDATE:
The pond widens a bit every day. We feel by May it will be the real thing.
We are already seeing more birds. So very exciting.

MUI MUI REPORT:
Mui is thinking it's still winter and sleeping by the fire throughout the day.
But he seems a tad bit less voracious.
He may be contemplating slimming down a bit for Springtime and sun bathing.

BARN NEWS:
Lonesome Lou's new buddies will be here in March.
WORD (or I should say), IDIOM OF THE MONTH:
Mad as a March Hare
The phrase appears in John Heywood's collection of proverbs published in 1546.
So mad hares have been around for awhile.
Is it because they box, jump, and run like crazy in March during the breeding season?
or
Is it because they are so excited for Spring?
Their ears are warming up finally and they have a wild hair.
or
Is it because they have gone to too many tea parties and drunk too much tea?
Watch out for being in the company of a Mad Hatter.
or
Is it the world is a bit mad? and it is making them mad.
Hope to see you soon.
