At Bear Mountain Lodge, we have always been passionate about preserving and celebrating the natural beauty that surrounds us. Originally formed in 2018, the Bear Mountain Center for Sustainability had a mission that was delayed due to the pandemic. With plans finally in motion, we are excited to create a dedicated space for wildlife observation, conservation, and education. Nestled next to the breathtaking Gila Wilderness, our new bird and wildlife sanctuary will provide a unique opportunity for guests and locals to engage with nature, contribute to scientific observation, and experience the wonders of our region’s diverse ecosystem.
Located just a mile from the Continental Divide, our observation site is perfectly positioned for migrating birds and other wildlife. This historic dry tank, once used for cattle, now serves as a natural pond, attracting a variety of species. With the help of conservationists and educators like Dr. Norris, we have compiled bird and plant life lists to help visitors appreciate the rich biodiversity of the area. Whether you're an avid birder or simply enjoy the serenity of nature, this sanctuary offers a one-of-a-kind experience.
Our mission extends beyond observation—we are actively creating a sustainable space with the help of community partners. Thanks to a $30,000 grant from The 30 Something of Grant County, we have been able to install a windmill for water supply, drill a well, and enhance the site with beautifully designed viewing benches created by the Youth Mural Program. Additionally, with the support of Dennis Miller, we have already had the privilege of releasing a rehabilitated Great Horned Owl back into the wild at our sanctuary. Future plans include installing cameras for data collection, creating a maintained pathway, and fencing the pond to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for both wildlife and visitors.
We invite guests and community members to visit and be a part of this ongoing conservation effort. Whether you're enjoying the peaceful setting, learning about native plant species, or watching migratory birds make their seasonal journeys, the Bear Mountain Center for Sustainability is a place for education, inspiration, and connection with nature. Stay tuned as we continue to enhance this special space and bring our vision of sustainability and preservation to life.
