May 31st 6pm- McCray Gallery at the University

Opening-an exhibit of Michael's new work. The piece above is on exhibit.

We feel this work is the work of a lifetime.

Fiesta Latina is June 6-9.

Artisans, (50) from Mexico, are coming with their work, a wide range of art and craft-from book makers to potters. Adelina (one of our favorites) is bringing her wonderful Oaxacan pottery featuring the black hearts. Lots of music and dancing throughout the fiesta. Western New Mexico University's website has a list of the events. It is a fun time!

LODGE NEWS:

We finished redoing the O'Keefe Room-it now has a desk and a chaise for reading.

The room is still the warm welcoming happy yellow.

The Leopold is next. We are replacing the drapes and touching up the desk.

The mini-splits are now in all the rooms of Myra's Retreat, Coop, and the Wren's Nest. They have proved to work wonderfully with real air conditioning.

CAFE NEWS:

June 13th is Italian night-make your reservations to hold a spot.

Bryan is cooking up a storm and Solara wines have paired wine for the courses.

An Italian dish called Brucciloni, a rolled and stuffed flank steak, is the centerpiece.

The dinner should be great.

We will NOT have the wine pairing dinner on the 20th of June. BUT WE WILL ON- Tuesday, July 20th

The dinner will feature a crab risotto, citrus salad, and a fun ice cream sandwich.

The crab risotto was critiqued by "Think a Recipe" group last week.

They gave it a thumbs up. We are having a great time in the class.

We will have "Think a Recipe" again on July 26th at noon.

July 28th-Sunday Clay Festival Brunch 11-3pm Always fun.

We will feature the pottery of Barb Campbell and Javier Cervantes.

GALLERY NEWS:

We are saddened to report William Shumway has passed at 82. He was a great painter, known for his expert brush strokes, use of mica paint, and carpenter pencil.

He was a champion of other artists and a sweet human being.

Many of you know his work, the crow paintings in the Leopold room and Wren's Nest. Also the fabulous portrait of Patty Smith in the Leopold.

He also painted the Linus Pauling murals at Oregon State University.

He will be missed.

BOOK UPDATES:

Jay Hemphill's GILA 100 is on the ocean. Landing date is supposed to be June 17th.

We will send an email and start sending your books ASAP.

Books about food is the next fun item we are exploring.

On August 10th, Saturday, we are having a luncheon and book club discussion about  Ruth Reichl's book, "Save Me the Plums".

Let us know if you'd like to come. The luncheon will be themed around the book.

Limit 10 participants.

Let us know if there is a favorite foodie book, you'd like to discuss.

BARN NEWS:

It is all about aviaries. Alan and Tomas are reworking the cow barn into a pheasant aviary. We will have pictures next month.  It will be nice and tall for them to fly.

The Paul Wilson weather vane is also going on the barn next week or so.

It is great, we'll have photos of it too.

MUI MUI REPORT:

He has been busy helping Rainier do outside work. One can see Mui Mui faithfully following Rainier around the grounds. Everyone needs a gardener's assistant.

WORD OF THE MONTH:

Metachrosis: the POWER to change color by the expansion of special pigment cells.

A great super power for sure. (One we all want).

We were having a visit on the portal, Robin noticed a phasmid or walking stick had changed to the color of the stucco. It was a beautiful beige with just a hint of green

(Martha Stewart would have been jealous).

It had become a better representation of the stucco hue than the stucco. It looked like a miniature minimalistic sculpture complete with great form and patina.

What a great power to have.
