BEAR MOUNTAIN LODGE

December 2024

The New Year is Almost Here!

A time to reflect, a time to plan, and a time to cozy up to the fireplace.
Or - one may want to celebrate Zack style.
Celebrate January, the Wolf Month, by howling like Zack.
He howls when you are making his breakfast.
He howls when he is going for a walk.
He is a happy howler, we, humans, should take note.
Howling for fun is a good thing.

A great time to hike, nap, or read a book (Howl by Alan Ginsburg) by the fireplace.

CAFE NEWS :
We are very excited about the January 20th wine pairing.
We developed a recipe for wild rice pilaf that has dried cranberries, figs, and shallots.
We will have smoked turkey or an acorn squash half filled with a creamy custard and toasted sunflower seeds and pistachios with the wild rice, yum.
It is a great winter menu.
January 29th 5-7pm.
We are celebrating Chinese New Year.
We will feature a basil fried rice paired with soy sauce marinated pork, or a veggie zucchini pistachio stir fry, or tea smoked chicken.
See full menus online.

BIRD SANCTUARY NEWS:
Jess and Anna are coming next week to dig the trench for the pipe to take the water to the pond site. The water will start filling the old cow dry tank.
Another step in the process for the bird sanctuary. It is very exciting.

COOKBOOK UPDATE:
The Bear Mountain Cookbook was picked to be sold in the gift store of the New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe.

BARN NEWS:
My Cochin chickens are mostly 14 years old now.
Recently, several have passed; it makes me sad. According to the internet their life span is 10 years, so the girls are doing well.
This spring, we will get some chicks.
New chicks in the spring seems like a perfect way to celebrate longer days.

GALLERY NEWS:
Michael Metcalf installed his gateway sculpture for Western New Mexico University.
It is truly beautiful.
We are so thrilled. The sculpture is nicely lit at night too.
We will send an email with pictures; the piece is grand.

WORD OF THE MONTH:
Existential - relating or affirming existence.
I have always loved the Albert Camus quote:
"In the depths of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer."
The new year always makes me reflect and, for me, there is hope around the corner.
May your new year be bright and howling good.
Auld Lang Syne, my friends.
See you in 2025.
