| FEBRUARY 2012 | Salt Lick Labyrinth celebration at Bear Mountain Lodge. February 12 between 2-4pm.Cordelia Rose, national labyrinth builder, constructed a classic style labyrinth on the old salt lick using local quarried rock from Rohan Stites' quarry. The rock has rutile and iron oxide and looks like a Chris Gum bowl with his beautiful glazes. The Labyrinth has a bench to relax and contemplate - cookies and tea will be served at the Lodge. | MARCH 2012 | PHOTO CONTEST! We are going to have a Bear Mountain Lodge Contest, yes, a contest. Many of you know we have great birding and wildlife here at the Lodge and the surrounding Gila National Forest. We want your photographs of the wildlife here at the Lodge. The best photo will be featured in Lodge advertisements and have a place on the website. When you are here-please give us a disc or we can download the photo- a limit of two photographs per person. On May 1st the Bear Mountain Gang will decide the winner of the contest. The winner will receive 2 night stay at the Lodge. |

| MAY 2012 | GERTRUDE GRAHAM SMITH, a studio potter and teaching artist who single fires her porcelain ware in a soda kiln near Penland, NC will show her wonderful work at the Blue Dome Gallery. Opening Thursday May 24 at the Lodge from 4:00 to 6:30 - the show will run through July.More Info and Workshop Details Gay's show is in conjunction with Friends of Clay and Western New Mexico University. Public Lecture - Gestural Forms in Salt and Soda Tuesday May 22nd 6:30-7:30 Parotti Recital Hall WNMU Campus. The Nationally reknown Tour of the Gila Bike Race and The Bluesfest in Silver City keep the town hopping in May, so plan ahead and book early to ensure accomodations. |

| JULY 2012 | OWLING WITH MIKE FUGAGLI - July 13. Mike will be your guide into the area's owls. Cost $25.00 per person. Packed snacks and water provided by the Lodge for Lodge guests and a discounted rooms are available. A wonderful opportunity to explore the region and learn about these wonderful birds. Owling tour is limited to 15 people.
MEMOIR WRITING - WORKSHOP WITH ANN ROHOVEC - July 20-23 - Limit 10 people. Ann Rohovec will hold a writing workshop on memoir writing. Open to the public, with rooms available at a discount for Workshop participants who want to stay at the Lodge. After many years of teaching writing in classroom settings, Ann is currently a mentor to a long established group of 25 writers, some of whom are published. Inspired by them as well as by members of her own writing group, Ann's writing focus is on memoir. This workshop is designed for those who would enjoy revisiting their lives through writing, whether creating a family history, sharing experience and wisdom or capturing for yourself important events and people. Through directed writing exercises and with time to write in a supportive environment, participants will learn how to begin, how to keep writing and how to make life stories lively and interesting. Afraid you are not "a writer"? Come and discover that you are. KAREN PRITCHETT has been commissioned to make a bench for the Lodge. She will construct a cement mache bench for the property composed of plastic bottles and other recycled material as the infrastructure in the shape of an animal with cement mache on the surface. | AUGUST 2012 | WREN'S NEST MURAL Installation - August 1 and 2. A handbuild by Linda Brewer cone 5 mural depicting different species of wrens 9am-12 noon. Open to the public and free. CLAY TILE FOR MIRRORS WORKSHOP - August 3, 4, and 5. John McNulty of Tucson Art Museum fame will conduct a clay tile workshop on making mirrors using molds, bas-relief, and other texturing methods. COST: $150; limit 8 people. Lodge Guests discount 15%. CLAYFEST SILVER CITY-TUCSON MUSEUM OF ART - Sunday, August 5 - The Lodge will host the awards for the Clayfest on Sunday. Awards ceremony $16. brunch included GET DOWN TO EARTH WITH YOGA - Saturday, August 4, 10:00am and 4:00pm at the Community Herb Garden on 6th Street behind Bear Creek Herbs. Free yoga sessions will be held out of doors during the Clay Festival and will be led by Cordelia Rose, founder of Glenwood Yoga. Everyone is welcome including those with no experience. The first hour will be easy poses and relaxation followed by half an hour of more advanced poses for those who would like to stay longer. Bring your own yoga mat or borrow one of ours. GET DOWN TO EARTH WITH YOGA - Sunday, August 5, 9:00 - 10:30am at Bear Mountain Lodge off Alabama Road. Cordelia Rose will combine Hatha yoga with a Classic labyrinth and lead an easy and relaxing session around and inside the Salt Lick Labyrinth. As well as classic yoga poses Cordelia will teach Yoga for the Hands. She will lead joyous steps into the center of the labyrinth and out again in the spirit of a Swedish maypole dance. Cordelia welcomes questions about yoga and labyrinths. BUILDING SCULPTURES WITH ARCHITECTURAL FOAM - August 6 & 7, 10-3pm, $350 per person, limited to 8 - Learn how to make relatively lightweight sculptural forms to mosaic, from the hobbyist to the professional interested in public art. This is a messy, hands-on workshop and you will create a piece to take home. In this two day workshop you will experience a variety of techniques to work with polystyrene foam. All materials will be provided, including architectural foam. Please email for more details: cece@ceciliastanford.com APPLYING MOSAIC TO FOAM/CONCRETE SCULPTURES - August 8, 10-4 pm, $250 per person - This one day workshop will instruct students in covering the sculptures they have made in the first workshop, Building Sculptures with Architectural Foam. The focus will be on tesserae, tile and other vitreous objects that create a durable outdoor sculpture. While this is a hand-on workshop, we will be discussing suitability of materials, appropriate adhesives and techniques of applying tiles and objects to sculptures. | SEPTEMBER 2012 | THE GILA: RADICAL VISIONS/THE ENDURING SILENCE - MICHAEL BERMAN Thursday, September 13; 4:00-7:00pm - Photography Opening and Book Release Party. Please join us to celebrate the premier of this new book, Essays by Charles Bowden, Philip Connors, Dave Foreman, Jorge Garcia, John Horning, Victor Masayesva, Jr., Guy McPherson, Alex G. Muñoz Jr., Sharman Apt Russell, M. H. Salmon, Patrick Toomay and others. Photographs by Michael P. Berman. This book samples the wide range of personal and strongly held visions this Wilderness inspires. The collection of essays is paired with a compilation of images by award-winning local artist and Guggenheim Fellow, Michael P. Berman. His black and white photographs of the Gila Wilderness offer a wordless exploration into this complex and subtle landscape.
A selection of Michael's photographs from the book will be displayed in the gallery and throughout the Lodge. This exiting show of photographs are from our Gila Wilderness; not only are they beautiful but the images reveal just some of the reasons we love this unique place. Please come and celebrate with us. Refreshments and appetizers will abound. Books will be available for purchase. All proceeds from book sales will benefit the Gila Conservation Coalition. |

THE WILD, THE FURRY, AND THE METALLIC - December 1, 2:00-4:00pm come and meet everyone, have some wonderful treats, and visit. The Wild,The Furry, and The Metallic is an invited show of work from Marjie Bassler, Linda Brewer, Ramona Vigil Eastwood, Lynne Pomeranz, and Cecilia Stanford- the group has had a show of work at the Sunport Airport in Albuquerque for the last two years. We are bringing the group to Silver City. Marjie does wonderful whimsical painting of animals, Ramona is an award winning jeweler, Lynne photographs mostly horses in all of their glory, Cece is known for her mosiac work, but who knows what she'll do - should be exciting. Linda will have new work in clay and mixed media. Come and enjoy. |
